Dark line at my gums

I’ve had dental crowns for some time, but now there is this dark line at my gumline that I can’t get rid of no matter how hard I brush. Do you know what can get rid of it?

Carol B.- Little Rock, AR

Carol,

Brushing will not get rid of that dark line. I’m concerned that if you continue to scrub the gums as hard as I suspect, that you could inadvertantly erode your gumline.

The reason for the dark line is your dental crowns are porcelain fused to metal crowns. After time, they will always reveal that dark line. There is nothing you can do to the crowns to get rid of the line.

The only way to deal with this situation is to get all-porcelain crowns. They will never develop a line at the gumline. They also have an additional benefit have being more natural looking and translucent looking. Make sure you go to an experienced cosmetic dentist to do the work, or you may be disappointed in the results.
